Cameroon became a recognized party to the Nagoya Protocol on access to Genetic Resources and Fair and Equitable sharing of the Benefits arising from their utilisation, on 28 February 2017. It establishes legal certainty and transparency for both providers and users of genetic resources. Cameroon elaborated and adopted its national ABS strategy in July 2012 and validated its action plan in 2016. In this light, information was needed to facilitate the development of this Bicultural Community Protocol for the community of Lewoh that will in turn facilitate partnerships with the private sector and government in the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol. The main objective this Biocultural Community Protocol is to ensure that the community of Lewoh’s needs, rights and concerns relating to the conservation, use and access to genetic resources (such as Mondia whitei) (including associated traditional  knowledge) are well articulated and to facilitate partnerships with the government and private sector. The specific objectives were to describe the people of Lewoh and their cultural practices most especially with regards to the use of genetic resources as well as associated traditional knowledge and to understand the procedure of access to their genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge. From the 1st June 2018, focused group discussions took place in the Lewoh Community to document their culture, customs and customary laws as well as their community-based resource management. The organization of the community was also documented. This information was used to elaborate the first bicultural community protocol in Cameroon.
